There are win-able contests

May 31st, 2009

Last week, while doing my daily skim-thru on Brooklyn Vegan, I came across a contest. Win tickets to a Girltalk show at Hiro Ballroom by submitting a photo on Spin.com of any show you’ve been to. Seemed like such a simple contest and I was probably late in the game to submit a photo, but I decided I had nothing to lose in trying. I submitted a photo of Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings from Jazzfest, not thinking much of it. Memorial day weekend was approaching and I was anxiously waiting for the clock to turn 5 so I could leave the office, and an e-mail came in from Spin.com “Congratulations 2009 SPIN & Canon Expressions Winner!” It was quite the good beginning to a long weekend!

So, on Thursday I went to Girltalk at Hiro Ballroom. Considering the number of shows I’ve been to, I’d never been to Hiro Ballroom. Great venue, couldn’t believe how small it was considering last time I saw GirlTalk was at the huge Terminal 5. Only 250 people at Hiro, open bar sponsored by Absolut and an incredible show. Immediately when Greg Gillis got on stage, the crowd rushed up to dance with him. It was so intimate and incredible. Great music, great energy and such a fun time. He is so entertaining to watch. If you’re not familiar with Girltalk check out his myspace page here and videos on youtube!

Immaculate Infatuation

May 20th, 2009

“We’re not real food critics, so you’re not going to hear any pretentious foodie hobnob from us. If you want those kinds of shenanigans, hit up the NY Times, Time Out New York, or New York Magazine, and see what the ‘experts’ think.” says the founders of Immaculate Infatuation. Two guys in the music biz, Andrew Steinthal and Chris Stang recently started Immaculate Infatuation to give you a taste of NYC. They’re not experts, they’re just giving their opinion on restaurants in NYC to check out (or not check out). Plus, their “go-to” place is The Smith so I know they have good taste! They have a very relaxed, tell it like it is and fun writing style. Check out Immaculate Infatuation here if you need some suggestions on places to go to eat in NYC and sign up for their weekly newsletter!

We are the people that rule the world

May 15th, 2009

Ever since I heard about Dark Was the Night, I’ve had a hard time listening to anything else. I just love every single track on that album. My friend came back from Australia a few weeks ago, brought over a CD and told me to put it in my computer and import it immediately. So I did. I danced in my seat and really enjoyed the sound of this music. It was Empire of the Sun’s album, Walking On A Dream. Every song has it’s own feel and has a lot of energy. The album cover is super cheesy, so try to not let it steer you away from the fun 80’s-ish music. The whole album feels like it belongs in the movie, Wedding Singer (which happened to be on VH1 last night as I went to sleep…) Empire of the Sun is an Australian electronic band and I don’t usually listen to electronic music but I can’t get their music out of my head. Check them out at: http://www.myspace.com/empireofthesunsound

For all you Indie music fans, check out: Oh My Rockness a website that fills you in on all the upcoming Indie shows in NYC. They have a weekly show list that hits your mailbox on Thursday’s that is super informative. Check out http://www.ohmyrockness.com/ and subscribe to their e-mail list so that you never miss a show!!

Veggie Shmeggie

May 14th, 2009

My friends and I headed down to Tribeca to have a nice little dinner at Bubby’s. I had heard of it as more of a breakfast/brunch place but we decided to go for an early, after work dinner. It’s an adorable place, very comfortable, with lots of room. We were seated at a table that could have fit more than three of us and it was nice to have that space and not feel crowded–especially eating in a NYC restaurant. Our waiter was extremely friendly–suggesting drinks and dishes to us. They had many options for side dishes and many of the entrees came with a choice of side(s). We shared the Hot Artichoke Dip on tomcat bakery sourdough which was absolutely delicious. Just the right amount of dip for the three of us to pick on before our meal. I was considering getting the Platter Of Grilled Vegetables but I had a feeling it wasn’t going to be what I wanted and $17 for veggies seemed quite silly.

As I only became a vegetarian a year ago, I’ve constantly been trying out different restaurants veggie burgers. I decided to order the Bubby’s Housemade Veggie Burger with caramelized onions (they give you the choice of different toppings–cheeses, veggies and such for $1 extra) and a side of Onion Straws. Unfortunately it didn’t do it for me. It was a bit too mushy–every time I went to take a bite, the burger fell apart. the onion straw were so fried, that I couldn’t tell you if there were even onions in it. My friends both enjoyed their meals of fish tacos and a turkey burger (highly recommended by the waiter). We felt we had to try the Chocolate Chip Cookie with vanilla ice cream. Cookie was heated up and delicious. Overall, Bubby’s was a cute place, good service, but the food wasn’t excellent (atleast mine wasn’t!) Penelope is still number one for me for the best veggie burger in the city. If you haven’t been to Penelope, go there. Everything on their menu that I’ve had is excellent. As is the service and wine!

Music Styling by WhitneyDay

May 12th, 2009

Born and raised in NYC, WhitneyDay has experience in composing/sound design & mixing and re-mixing for film, commercials, and TV. She offers DJ services for parties and events and isn’t your typical DJ. She has recently created a new and more affordable way to add musical entertainment to an event, known as “Music Styling.” As a music stylist, she has created a unique service of carefully selecting and programming tracks–she can pre-load your ipod with as many hours worth of music as you want, including any particular artists/tracks that you want PLUS similar artists that have a comparable sound. It’s a great way to learn about new music in the genre(s) of your choice, keep it on your ipod and save money on hiring a live DJ. Each playlist is custom made based on the event, or person who is looking to acquire new sounds. To learn more about WhitneyDay check out: www.whitneyday.com
